Help your appliances through old age

Help your appliances through old age The economy has stopped a lot of people from replacing their energy-hungry old refrigerators. Help your aging appliance through tough times so it can run as efficiently as possible.

Here’s how:

  • Don’t store uncovered liquids in the refrigerator. They give off vapors that make the unit work harder.

  • Let hot foods cool before placing them in the refrigerator, but don’t leave perishables unrefrigerated for more than two hours.

  • When cooking, remove all of your refrigerated ingredients at once so you don’t have to keep opening the refrigerator door.

  • Don’t put a second refrigerator in the garage unless the unit is specifically built for that use. The temperature changes in an unheated space can damage the appliance or make it work too hard.
