Waunakee Utilities has applied to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) to adjust water rates. View the PSC notice that recently went out to customers here. Below are answers to common questions.
What’s happening?
Waunakee Utilities has submitted an application to the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSC) to increase water rates.
If approved by the PSC, the average residential customer using 5,000 gallons of water each month would see an increase of $4.42. This brings the average bill from $28.88 to $33.30. Actual bills vary depending on water usage and meter size. This represents approximately a $.44 increase each year since the last rate adjustment went into effect in 2015.
Why is the rate adjustment needed?
The rate adjustment is needed mainly because increased water demand in the Village has caused the Utility to have to build a new well and water tower, which will come online later this year.
This investment in the capacity of the system will cost the Utility over $6.2 million.
Who decides whether rates are approved?
The PSC has reviewed our initial application, and they will make the final decision on the rate structure after a public hearing and comment period. The public hearing is scheduled for 2 p.m. on March 10.
The PSC’s review includes looking at operating expenses, capital investments, and projected revenue estimates. The Utility cannot implement new rates without PSC approval.
We do not currently have an estimated date for when the new water rates will become effective but anticipate it could be in April or May.
